Where to Apply for a Permit

All Building, Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing permits can be obtain at the Department of Permits & Inspections Counter fourth floor of the City Hall Building. The City Hall Building is located at 801 Crawford Parkway. Metered parking is available under the building or in the open lot on the left side of the building.

Permits are not issued before 8:30 AM or after 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. All recognized state and national holidays are observed.

Home owners who are not licensed contractors can obtain permits only between the hours of 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM.

Cash and check are the only method of payment that we currently accept.

To help make certain sufficient material is submitted for a permit the following list is provided:

• two copies of plans and complete construction details

• copies of the Site plan or survey of the property

• certificates of approvals from review committees in historic areas

There are design review districts in Olde Towne, Port Norfolk, Truxtun, Cradock, Park View and the Downtown area that require review and approval of ALL exterior modifications by the appropriate reviewing authority. Please contact the Planning Department at 393-8836 for further information.

Other City Departments may have to approve your plans before a permit can be issued. if you have any questions please contact staff at 393-8531.
